To prepare the first and second year students of the Willem de Kooning Academy for the DEMO Festival, I was asked to set up a motion design workshop. The workshop became a mix of motion theory, tutorials, inspiration and feedback sessions.
Over the course of four days and two assignments students learned basic After Effects knowledge combined with a focus on skills like conceptual thinking, storyboarding and motion theory. These are the results of the second assignment: Creating an internal motion poster exhibition.

During the exhibition the posters were on an endless looped shuffle. Looping one after the other, but never in the same order.

Students worked from a template for a looping poster that would both work as a standalone poster and a never-ending poster with all the students' posters combined. The only requirements were that the students would start and end their poster with a black circle on a white background through a smooth transition.
The 5 seconds were a reaction to the relatively slow-moving posters of the first assignment, which was all about experimentation in After Effects and learning by doing. Having to deal with a beginning and end combined with the 5-second limit created a great base for the students to work on.
